Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why would I want to get a pet snake?

Snakes are great pets for all ages, especially for people with allergies. People that can’t have furry creatures will have no allergy problems with a snake. Their smooth, slick body means no shedding of hair, brushing needed, or scratching nails.

Snakes eat once to twice a week, and their waste is solid making it as easy to clean as a litter box. In relation taking care of a snake is less effort than a dog. The two most important thing about snake care is water and heating see the care section for more info.

Q. How hard is it to take care of a snake?

It’s very easy to care for a snake, in relations to other animals. Once the terrarium is set up with heat, the only daily upkeep is checking water. Feeding happens once to twice a week, and waste removal is usually weekly.

Q. How often do snakes eat? And why?

Snakes eat depending on size of the meal, usually they will eat once to twice a week, but it can be more or less. During hibernation months they may eat less, or not eat at all, and after hibernation they may eat three or more times to make up for the month(s) of not eating.

The size of the snake and meal also play a part. If a snake is that normally eats an adult rat every week, and you feed it an adult mouse, it will most likely want two meals that week to make up the size difference of the meal. A 4 foot snake will also eat a “larger” meal (in terms of mass) than a 2 foot snake. So the 2 foot snake may eat a juvenile mouse weekly, but the 4 foot snake will eat 2 juvenile mice or small rat weekly.
